The Goggleby Stone is a 2.3 metre high slab of Shap granite – now firmly anchored in concrete. It has an axe-head shape being narrower at the base. It stand just west of Shap village. Originally there was a processional avenue of stones which led to the Kemp Howe stone circle on the southern fringe of the village.
Unfortunately the avenue was ruined at the time of the enclosure of common land and the stone circle has been bisected by the main line railway and overshadowed by industrial works.
However it is very well worth making the short walk from the village to see the Goggleby stone and the nearby Thunder stone.
