Mirehouse is a remarkable, historic house which has been owned by the Spedding family for over 300 years. It is located near Bassenthwaite and has views across Bassenthwaite Lake. The tea room is located across from the entrance next to the car park on the A591.
There are woodland adventure playgrounds and gardens to discover – including a Bee garden. You can also do a circular walk of about a mile from the house down to the lake and along the shore. The spectacularly located little church of St Bega’s is in the grounds close to the lake.
Lord Alfred Tennyson stayed at Mirehouse in 1835 and wrote “Morte d’Arthur” there. The house has many other artistic and literary connections – manuscripts and portraits not only of Tennyson but also of Wordsworth, Southey and Carlyle.
