Ullswater and the islands

Ullswater and the islands

We often take this photo – the full panorama of the Ullswater valley is laid out before as you drive down from Troutbeck on the A66 near Keswick to meet the road that skirts Ullswater close to Aira Force.

The only real island in Ullswater is Norfolk Island – named after the Duke of Norfolk – a big landowner in the area. It is out of bounds between April and May because of nesting birds.

There are also the Lingy Holm islands and the two Cherry Holm islands.
