Tornado in Cumbria

Tornado Steam Train

February saw the first steam-hauled scheduled passenger train services in England for 50 years. Over three days there were several services between Appleby and Skipton when a 7 carriage train was hauled by a Tornado steam engine.

The Carlisle to Settle railway has been closed between Armathwaite and Carlisle since February 2016 – but the line reopens in full on 31st March. These Tornado services were to celebrate that reopening of the full route. The photo shows Torndao about to leave the station at Kirby Stephen – where it had conveniently stopped over a road bridge allowing easy access to take the photo!
