New Year’s Eve was an opportunity to revisit one of our favourite places – the woodland walk from White Moss through to Grasmere and to the pebbly beach near the weir. Sometimes in summer this area is a hive of activity with young children paddling at the water’s edge and people sitting on the grassy bank to picnic – with the view across the lake up to Dunmail Raise and the start of the Helvellyn range. Last summer our guests in Croft Corner saw a woodpecker coming to feed off the peanuts on the feeding station in their garden. It seemed to come very early every morning but was very timid – it flew off into the trees if it sensed anyone nearby. Some guests at Croft Corner in November commented that they had seen it in the garden then as well.
